Open Start planning. Create a project on your device, choose a template or import an existing plan without an account. Members with an approved trial can choose Online account when creating a new project.
Templates create a separate local project. Change the sample tasks and dates to match your own work; they are starting points, not fixed schedules.
Add tasks, milestones and groups
Use Add task, Add milestone or Add group. Enter the task name and duration; use a milestone for a zero-duration event. Group dates and progress are calculated from their children.
Double-click a Gantt cell or press F2 to edit. Table mode supports direct entry and pasting a range from Excel. Enter and Tab move between cells; Esc discards an edit or closes task details. Drag the row handle to reorder work.
Set working days and predecessors
In Review schedule, choose working weekdays, add a holiday date or date range, and choose your date format. Review the proposed changes before applying a new calendar.
Predecessors use WBS references: for example, 1.1FS means this task runs after task 1.1 finishes. FS, SS, FF and SF relations support positive or negative working-day lag. Changes to a linked task update its affected successors; moving an earlier finish does not automatically remove intentional gaps.
Dragging a linked bar opens a proposal with the affected tasks. Apply it or cancel without changing the saved plan. Undo reverses an applied change.
Track progress, deadlines and workload
Update the completion percentage and capture a Baseline before tracking changes. Compare the current schedule with that frozen plan; replacing the baseline requires confirmation.
Warnings beside task names explain predecessor conflicts, nonworking starts, overdue work and planned deadline overruns. People & workload helps review overlapping assignments; Critical path shows the current schedule's critical work. Review proposals before changing dates or assignments.
Import and export Excel or CSV
Choose Import / Export → Import Excel / CSV. Select the worksheet, map its columns and review the preview. You can map an end date to derive duration; if you supply both, they must agree with the selected working calendar.
Export Excel (.xlsx) creates a formatted value report with task types, dates, percentages, colors and bold groups. Choose the full project or current filters, and standard or visible columns. It is not an Excel workbook that recalculates the schedule. Use JSON for complete project backups.
Print a branded schedule or save PDF
Set the logo, report title and prepared-by details in Project information in the project sidebar. Then choose Import / Export → Print / Save PDF and review the date range, rows, columns and paper settings.
In the browser print dialog, match the paper size and orientation, check the scale, and turn off Headers and footers to remove browser-generated dates and URLs. The browser controls the final PDF filename.
Save a useful workspace view
In Columns → Saved views, name the current layout. A view remembers column visibility/order, date format, Gantt column widths, zoom and Gantt/Table mode.
Apply a saved view to any project on this website without changing tasks or filters. Expand workspace hides the header and project sidebar; Restore brings them back. These display preferences belong to this browser and website address.
Back up your work and move to another device
Projects are saved automatically in this browser for this website address. Wait for Saved on this device. If a save error appears, export a JSON backup before leaving the page.
Use Export backup in the project sidebar; on a phone, open Projects first. Restore the JSON file in the destination browser to create a separate project copy. Regular JSON backups preserve calendars, links, baselines and project information that Excel/CSV reports do not fully retain.
Projects at localhost do not automatically appear at ganttfree.com. Each browser, device and domain has separate local storage. Transfer manually with JSON or open Online projects after signing in. Use Save online to save the project you are editing to your account; there is no automatic sync. Reopening an online project reuses its linked working copy on this device. If local changes conflict with the newer online version, you can choose which copy to open and back up before replacing it.
